The recently relocated Lost Highway Brewing Company was the venue for the HopAholics’ August meeting and Summer Homebrew Competition. President Will Trail welcomed several new members to the club, several of whom had submitted their homebrews in the club competition. He also announced that some bulk base malt and cleaning supplies will be purchased by the club as additional benefits to members.
But the focus was on the much anticipated competition. The theme was “Summer Beers” and altogether 18 widely varying beers were sampled and rated – from chile beer to wheat ales, Kölsches to Belgians and sours to IPAs. Following a grueling tasting process, the votes were tallied:
First Place – Brad Tomlin’s IPA
Second Place – Judy Kuenker’s Wedding Kiss Kölsch
Third Place – Cody Baylis’ Sour Blonde Peach Ale
Recipes for the winners will be added to the Recipes Forum in the Forums section of our website. Thanks to all who brought in their homebrews for evaluation!
We also want to thank James Pachorek, owner and Beer Knight, and all the great folks at Lost Highway Brewing Company for being such gracious hosts. James conducted a personal tour of his brewery, which specializes in Belgian styles, at the conclusion of the competition. Originally established on Colfax Avenue in Denver, Lost Highway can now be found in Centennial northwest of the intersection of Peoria and Arapahoe Avenues. The new digs, officially opened at the end of July, are providing the much awarded brewery some needed flexibility and it’s definitely a welcome addition to the southern part of the metro area.
